Welcome to the Gran Canaria Clean-Up Initiative, a collaboration uniting individuals, communities, businesses, organizations, and the tourism sector to create a plastic-free, sustainable island. Focused on awareness and eco-education, we’re starting here in Gran Canaria, with the goal to inspire global change and protect our planet for future generations.
Through this collective effort, we aim to inspire change -because improving the world starts with each of us. Together, we take responsibility for protecting our environment, our climate, and reconnecting with nature.
From the mountains to the coastline, we organize regular clean-ups to reduce waste, promote eco-awareness, and build a culture of sustainability.
Join us on this journey and become part of a movement that’s shaping a sustainable future for the next generations and to raise awareness of the vital connection between people and nature!
The Gran Canaria Clean-Up, part of Foundation Route 66’s People & Nature pillar, is integral to our mental resilience program for European young adults. Our mission is to create a plastic-free, sustainable world while empowering the next generation- youth and children- to take responsibility for the planet. Through clean-ups and eco-awareness efforts, we aim to build environmental leaders and foster a deep connection to nature.
We collaborate with partners like Oceans4Life, Travel Without Plastic, Stichting ZieMens, Everlast Consultancy, Petty Foundation, Gran Canaria Holistic Centre, Impakt Event Bureau, The European New Bauhaus, local governments, and various European partners to protect the natural beauty of our planet and inspire environmental responsibility. Together, we’re building a cleaner, greener future for the world and the next generations.
The clean-up events aims to raise awareness about sustainability and involve local communities, European youth, and international partners in environmental action.
The Gran Canaria Clean-Up Initiative is more than just removing waste -it's about building a movement towards a sustainable, plastic-free world. Every piece of plastic we collect helps protect the planet for future generations, while raising awareness about the harmful effects of pollution on our ecosystems. We encourage hotels, businesses, schools, and local communities to join us in this vital mission. Through participation in clean-ups and eco-education, we can teach the next generation to value and protect the Earth. Whether you're welcoming tourists, running a business, or educating young people, your involvement makes a difference.
Plastic pollution is a global crisis. Every year, millions of tons of waste end up in the oceans, damaging ecosystems and harming wildlife. This event offers a hands-on way to help combat this issue by cleaning our local environment. From the barranco to the sea, we’ll remove waste, upcycle materials, and work together for a better planet.
All materials for the clean-up are provided:
On this website, you can find the current locations across the island where you can join, including the Barranco of Fataga and other areas.
Everyone is welcome! Whether you're a local resident, tourist, business, school, hotel, or organization, you can join our clean-ups and contribute to a plastic-free, sustainable world.
We hold clean-ups every Wednesday from 10:00 to 11:30 and every first Saturday of the month.
We’re creating a lasting impact for the island and future generations.
The Gran Canaria Clean-Up initiative, led by Foundation Route 66, is driven by collaboration and the generous support of our partners and donors. While we actively work with organizations like Oceans4Life, Travel Without Plastic, and the Ayuntamiento de la Villa San Bartolomé de Tirajana to tackle plastic pollution across Gran Canaria, the vital financial support from donors enables us to scale our efforts and create a lasting impact.
Our key supporters, ZieMens Foundation and the Petty Foundation, plays a crucial role as a donors. Their generous contributions help make our clean-up efforts possible, allowing us to not only clean the Barranco de Fataga and the surrounding areas but also to engage in impactful upcycling projects, weekly clean-ups, and educational programs for local communities and young adults.
Thanks to the commitment of our donors, we are able to focus on:

Microplastics are tiny plastic particles formed when larger plastics degrade. These particles are often ingested by marine animals, disrupting ecosystems and entering the human food chain. Their widespread presence in the ocean is a growing environmental and health concern.
Currently, over 150 million tons of plastic are in the ocean, and each year, 8 million tons more are added. This waste breaks down into microplastics, which are harmful to marine life and ecosystems, ultimately affecting human health and food chains.
This event isn’t just about removing waste—it’s about building a sustainable future. By taking action, you’re helping to protect our environment and showing that change starts with us. The event fosters collaboration between local and international participants, making it a true community effort.
By coming together to clean up plastic waste, we actively reduce pollution and raise awareness. This event empowers communities to take responsibility for the environment, promoting sustainable practices and ensuring cleaner oceans and ecosystems for future generations.
